Attitude problems

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

As I’m *sure* you’ve all noticed, our new protagonist in Mutant Blobs Attack has a rougher look, maybe even edgier – or spikier in the least. When designing levels I try to keep our new Blob in mind, and the theme that keeps on popping up is sarcastic, maybe a little mean, and certainly out for justice (did I just describe myself?).

Therefor, if I had to make a list of the characters who to me form new Blob’s attitude, it would be the following:

Casey Ryback: Under Siege

He can only tolerate injustice for so long before wooping ass

Statler and Waldorf: The Muppet Show

One of the best reasons to get old is being mean with impunity

Raphael: TMNT (TV Series)

What hurts more, his twin sai or biting commentary?

Chris Harvey speaking at GamerCamp this Sunday

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Hey all, just wanted to let everyone know that one of the co-founders of DrinkBox Studios, the one and only Chris Harvey, will be speaking at GamerCamp in Toronto this Sunday.

The talk, entitled “DrinkBox Days – Bringing Blobs and Guacamelee To Life” will be held at 4:30pm at George Brown College (230 Richmond St East).

Chris plans to give an overview of the development process for Mutant Blobs Attack and Guacamelee, talk about lessons learned and how we have changed things since the development of Tales from Space: About a Blob.

There are a lot of other great speakers planned. Check out the full list here.

We also plan to show Mutant Blobs Attack and Guacamelee to the public at the “MakerU Play-Test Zone” on Friday afternoon. This event starts at 1:15pm and is being held at the CSI Annex (720 Bathurst Street). Hope to see you there!

DrinkBox on The Electric Playground at First Person Show

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Hey guys. DrinkBox recently attended the Digifest First Person Show with playable versions of Mutant Blobs Attack and Guacamelee. Megashaun and Darcy from The Electric Playground were there filming, and the footage can now be viewed online here:

http://www.elecplay.com/all/digifest-2011-first-person-show/

They were kind enough to edit out most of my awkward pauses.

In addition to clips of Guacamelee and Mutant Blobs Attack,  you can see clips from other great Toronto games such as They Bleed Pixels  (with music by Megashaun) and Sissy’s Magical Ponycorn Adventure!

The video of the whole episode can be viewed below. Our part starts about 18:30 in.

Designer Behind the Scenes–Growth Charts

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Hey guys. As a little sneak peek into the creation of Mutant Blobs Attack, we thought we’d give you a brief look at our GROWTH CHART.

Mutant Blobs Attack is a game all about growth. You eat things to get bigger, but we don’t want you eating stuff larger than yourself. So to keep us in check, we have a chart that tracks what you can eat and when.
