Level Designer

Position Description

Drinkbox Studios is looking to hire an experienced Level Designer to help us create our upcoming Metroidvania ARPG “Blighted”. As a member of the Drinkbox Design team, you'll use our proprietary game development tools to craft memorable player experiences, working hand-in-hand with fellow designers to continuously refine and iterate on new levels and ideas.

We're crafting a stylized 3D isometric world, and the level design will be unique and challenging. The candidate must have a portfolio of previous level design experience, ideally including three-dimensional levels in an isometric perspective.

Responsibilities

Drinkbox Studios is a collaborative environment. We’re seeking someone with great communication skills and a flexible problem-solving mind. Responsibilities will include:

  • Design, prototype, and refine isometric 3D level layouts and combat scenarios

  • Take initiative and quickly prototype visually clear and compelling game spaces as well as higher level navigation and flow

  • Implement combat scenarios and adjust enemy / object behavior to create compelling gameplay

  • Present new level drafts and gameplay concepts to the rest of the dev team

  • Apply feedback from the team to iterate on levels to improve the gameplay, challenge, and player enjoyment

  • Communicate with other departments to help improve our level production pipeline and tools

  • Create and maintain game design documentation as required

Requirements

The ideal candidate for this position has the following:

  • A strong portfolio showcasing your recent level design work.

  • Foundational knowledge of the game development pipeline

  • Proficiency with level design tools for prototyping and building levels

  • Proficiency with scripting and scripting languages

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to present and discuss ideas

  • At least 3 years of professional experience as a Level Designer, with at least one shipped commercial title

  • Familiarity with version control systems like SVN, Perforce, or Git

  • A willingness to think technically, learn new tools, and solve creative challenges

  • Strong problem-solving, time management, and task management skills

  • A passion for video games and game design

Duration

12-month full-time initial contract.

Salary

Negotiable depending on experience level of candidate.

Location

Drinkbox Studios’ office is located in the Liberty Village neighbourhood of Toronto, Canada. Our team enjoys a hybrid work model, with flexibility to work from home or in the office. While we welcome all applicants, preference will be given to candidates residing in Ontario.
